The REST Method: How We Practice Root-Cause Care at Restorative Health and Wellness

By Rebekah Presley, FNP-C · Restorative Health and Wellness, Broken Arrow, OK

If you have ever left a medical appointment feeling like you were handed a prescription instead of an answer, you already understand why we built our practice around a different model. The REST Method is the framework that guides every patient relationship at Restorative Health and Wellness — four principles that define not just what we do, but how and why we do it.

Each letter stands for something specific. Together, they describe a standard of care that most women in perimenopause, menopause, and beyond have never experienced — and that our patients tell us, consistently, changed how they think about their own health.

R — Root Cause Evaluation

We test. We don't guess.

This is the foundation of everything. Before any protocol is written, before any prescription is considered, we need to understand what is actually driving your symptoms. That requires a comprehensive lab panel — not a standard TSH and CBC, but a full picture: free and total testosterone, estradiol, progesterone, DHEA-S, SHBG, free T3 and reverse T3 alongside TSH and free T4, fasting insulin alongside glucose and HbA1c, a full lipid panel with particle size, inflammatory markers, ferritin, micronutrients, and — when the clinical picture calls for it — comprehensive GI testing and genetic panels.

Standard reference ranges tell us what is average for the general population. They do not tell us what is optimal for you. There is a meaningful clinical difference between a TSH of 0.5 and a TSH of 4.8 — both technically within the "normal" range — and a patient at 4.8 who is exhausted, cold, and gaining weight deserves a more complete answer than "your thyroid is fine."

Root cause evaluation means we are not treating your symptoms in isolation. We are looking for the interconnected physiological drivers — hormonal, metabolic, thyroid, gut — that explain why you feel the way you feel. That is the only way to build a protocol that actually works.

E — Evidence-Based Protocols

The science on hormone therapy, thyroid optimization, and gut-hormone interaction has evolved significantly over the past two decades. What was considered standard of care in 2002 is not what the current evidence supports. We stay current because your care depends on it.

Evidence-based practice means our protocols are grounded in peer-reviewed research — not in what has always been done, not in what is easiest to prescribe, and not in the marketing materials of a supplement company. It means we are willing to update our approach when the evidence changes, and that we apply the same critical lens to new research that we apply to old assumptions.

It also means we are honest about what the evidence does and does not support. We do not make claims we cannot back up. When the data on a particular intervention is mixed or limited, we say so — and we make decisions with you, not for you.

For our patients, this translates to protocols that are built on what actually works: bioidentical hormone replacement therapy dosed and monitored based on your labs and your response, thyroid support that goes beyond a TSH, metabolic interventions grounded in current insulin resistance research, and gut protocols informed by the growing body of evidence on the microbiome's role in hormone metabolism and systemic inflammation.

S — Seen & Supported

Our patients consistently tell us the same thing: for the first time, they felt heard.

Not dismissed. Not told their labs were fine when they knew something was wrong. Not handed a prescription on the way out the door with a follow-up scheduled for six months later. Not made to feel like their symptoms were a normal part of aging that they simply needed to accept.

Being seen means we take your history seriously. It means we ask the questions that surface the full picture — not just the chief complaint, but the sleep, the stress, the gut, the energy, the mood, the things you have stopped mentioning because you have been told so many times that they are not a problem. It means we believe you when you say something is wrong, even when the standard labs say otherwise.

Being supported means you leave every visit with a clear understanding of what we found, why it matters, and what we are doing about it. Your written protocol is not a prescription — it is a document that explains your lab findings in plain language, outlines your treatment plan with clinical reasoning, and gives you a path forward that you can actually follow. You are not a passive recipient of care here. You are an informed participant in your own recovery.

Support also means continuity. Your RN coach is part of your care team throughout your program. Follow-up visits are built into the structure, not scheduled as an afterthought. When something changes — when your body responds differently than expected, when a new symptom surfaces, when your labs shift — we adjust. That is what ongoing support looks like in practice.

T — Tailored Treatment

There is no one-size-fits-all protocol at Restorative Health and Wellness. There never has been.

Two women can walk in with identical symptom lists — fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, sleep disruption, mood changes — and leave with entirely different treatment plans. Because their labs are different. Their histories are different. Their metabolic pictures are different. Their gut function is different. Their goals are different.

A protocol built for the average patient is not built for you. It is built for a statistical abstraction. Real treatment requires real individualization — starting with your specific findings and adjusting based on how your body actually responds over time.

Tailored treatment also means the plan evolves. The protocol you start with is not necessarily the protocol you finish with. As your labs change, as your symptoms shift, as your body responds to treatment, we adjust. We are following your results, not a template. That is what makes the difference between a program that produces real, lasting change and one that produces temporary relief followed by a return to baseline.

Why it matters

The REST Method is not a marketing framework. It is a description of how we actually practice — the commitments we make to every patient who walks through our door or connects with us via telehealth.

Root cause evaluation means you get answers, not assumptions. Evidence-based protocols mean your treatment is grounded in current science. Being seen and supported means you are never alone in this process. Tailored treatment means your care is built for you, specifically.

If you have been managing symptoms without resolution — if you have been told you are fine when you know you are not — we would like to have a real conversation about what is actually going on. That conversation starts with a complimentary Clarity Call.
