Why 'Your Labs Look Normal' Isn't the End of the Conversation
By Rebekah Presley, NP · Restorative Health and Wellness, Broken Arrow, OK
You've been to your doctor. You've had blood work done. And you've heard the same thing: "Everything looks normal."
But you don't feel normal. You're exhausted by mid-afternoon. Your brain feels like it's wrapped in cotton. You've gained weight despite eating well. Your mood is unpredictable. Your sleep is broken.
If this sounds familiar, you're not imagining it — and you're not alone.
The problem with "normal" lab ranges
Conventional lab reference ranges are built around population averages. They tell you whether your result falls within the range seen in most people — not whether your levels are optimal for you.
A TSH of 3.8 might technically be "within range," but many patients feel significantly better when their thyroid is functioning at 1.5–2.0. A testosterone level of 280 ng/dL is "normal" for a 70-year-old man — but for a 42-year-old who's exhausted and losing muscle, it's a problem worth addressing.
Root-cause medicine looks at the full picture: where your levels fall within the range, how your symptoms correlate with your numbers, and what functional patterns emerge when you look at multiple markers together.
What we look at differently
At Restorative Health and Wellness, a Foundation Consult isn't just a review of your CBC and metabolic panel. We look at:
- Thyroid function — TSH, Free T3, Free T4, and thyroid antibodies (not just TSH alone)
- Sex hormones — estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA-S, and SHBG
- Adrenal and cortisol patterns — especially relevant for fatigue and sleep disruption
- Metabolic markers — fasting insulin, HbA1c, lipid particle size, and inflammatory markers
- Nutrient status — B12, D3, ferritin, and magnesium are commonly low and commonly missed
We also spend time actually talking with you — about your history, your symptoms, your lifestyle, and what you've already tried. That context matters.
Why this approach works
Conventional medicine is excellent at identifying and treating acute illness. But chronic, low-grade dysfunction — the kind that makes you feel like a lesser version of yourself — often falls through the cracks of a 10-minute appointment and a standard panel.
Functional medicine fills that gap. It asks why your body is producing the symptoms it is, rather than simply managing them.
